Disney Channel Adds Classic Series to Wednesday Nights
Disney Channel is pulling a surprising, and sudden, schedule change to Wednesday nights starting this week. For the next three weeks, Disney has scheduled three different classic original series to air at midnight (ET/PT).
This Wednesday night (April 17), a single episode of Even Stevens will air: “Influenza: The Musical”.
Next Wednesday (April 24) at midnight is two back-to-back episodes of Lizzie McGuire: “Between a Rock and a Bra Place” and “Gordo’s Bar Mitzvah”.
The following Wednesday (May 1) at midnight is two back-to-back showings of Kim Possible: “Emotion Sickness” and “Bonding”.
This will be the first time a regular Even Stevens episode (minus the DCOM) has aired on Disney Channel since 2007. Lizzie McGuire was last seen on April 7, 2010 (minus a few airings of the movie that summer). Regular Kim Possible episodes have been off U.S. airwaves since Disney Channel did the “classic purge” on June 30, 2010 (where almost all non-current series were dropped from their late-night line-up).
At this time, there is no indication for why these sudden additions were made. There is also nothing available to tell whether they will continue this Wednesday night feature or not. Just because a few episodes are airing doesn’t mean they’re all coming back to the regular line-up… but you never know. Maybe Disney is interested to see how well these will do at a later time? I guess we’ll find out sooner or later!
Update: This may explain why Disney’s doing this. April 18, 1983 was when Disney Channel went on the air – 30 years ago as of Thursday morning (when the first “classic”, Even Stevens, will be airing).
Update 2: EW.com reports that the new Wednesday night/early Thursday block will be called “Disney Replay”.
