Boomerang is getting a jump start on the Thanksgiving Holiday with a week of family-targeted programming specials, mini-marathons and yuletide classics that is crowned by the network premiere of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!. On Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. (ET) and Thursday, Nov. 24, at 9:30 p.m. (ET), Boomerang will present for the first time the 1970 animated fable from Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. “Dr. Seuss,” which underscores the universal message, “a person’s a person no matter how small.” Families will be able to enjoy this timeless fantasy alongside another animated holiday classic, The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn’t (1972), which will air on Nov. 23 at 4:30 p.m., and Nov. 24 at 9 p.m.
Hearing a small voice—“as if some tiny person were calling for help”—Horton the Elephant discovers there is a microscopic community of intelligent beings called the Who’s living on a pink dandelion that only he can hear. Recognizing the dangers they face, he resolves to keep them safe. However, the other animals around him think Horton has gone crazy, so they resolve to take action for his own good. Horton and The Who’s must struggle against these impossible odds to prevent a tragedy and convince everyone that life can indeed exist beyond what we see or hear.
Produced and directed by legendary animator Chuck Jones, Horton Hears a Who! features the voice talents of Hans Conried (Narrator/Horton), June Foray (Jane Kangaroo/Mother Who) and Chuck Jones himself. The special premiered in prime time on March 19, 1970, on CBS.
“Horton Hears a Who! ranks among the all-time greatest and most beloved animated specials ever created for television,” said Stacy Isenhower, senior vice president of programming and scheduling for Boomerang and Cartoon Network. “We’re delighted to offer it to families of all ages this Thanksgiving, without commercial interruption. Along with our other literary specials this year, also based on classic stories, and holiday favorites, we’re ringing in the holidays with programming kids and parents can enjoy together.”
Boomerang also will celebrate the holiday week with its annual presentation of The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn’t. Featuring a cast of Hanna-Barbera’s best vocal talent such as June Foray (Looney Tunes, Rocky and Bullwinkle) and Don Messick (Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons), The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn’t is a story about friendship that is also full of adventure. Set in 1621, it chronicles one dangerously fateful day for Johnny Cooke, a young Pilgrim boy, and Little Bear, an Indian boy, who are discovered to be missing. The first Thanksgiving feast cannot start without them, and when their friend Jeremy Squirrel hears they are in peril he goes on a daring rescue mission. He braves waterfalls and snarling timber wolves to save his friends and succeeds in saving them and therefore Thanksgiving Day itself. The little hero is then invited to be guest of honor at this very special feast.
The holiday week will begin with two animated literary classics—Oliver and the Artful Dodger and Alice in Wonderland—airing Monday, Nov. 21, and Tuesday, Nov. 22, respectively, both at 4 p.m. (ET). Produced in 1972 by Hanna-Barbera Productions, Oliver and the Artful Dodger presents an animated re-creation of Charles Dickens’ popular novel, Oliver Twist, about a young orphan boy who escapes to the streets of London and ultimately is named the heir to the estate of the wealthy Mr. Brownlow. Alice in Wonderland (1966) is a musical spoof of the Lewis Carroll classic, following the adventures of Alice and her dog Fluff in Wonderland, where they meet an amusing assortment of all-new characters, including Hedda Hatter, Humphrey Dumpty and The White Knight.
Additional programming highlights will include the first-of-the-season presentation (Friday, Nov. 25, 6 a.m./7 p.m.) of ‘Tis the Season to be Smurfy (1987), a half-hour animated special depicting how the tiny blue Smurfs learn a lesson about the true meaning of Christmas when they help bring some holiday cheer to the lives of an old toy seller and his gravely ill wife; and the Emmy-nominated The Smurfs Christmas Special (1982), another half-hour telecast on Nov. 25 at 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., where the Smurfs use every little ounce of goodness they can muster for two children and their grandfather to battle an even greater evil than Gargamel! Finally, these holiday presentations will be followed by two-hour mini-marathons of favorite episodes of The Smurfs (1981-1990).
