“Johnny Bravo” Joins Boomerang

[via press release]

Boomerang Introduces JOHNNY BRAVO with Martin Luther King Jr. Marathon

Contemporary Classic Animated Series to Join Boomerang Line-Up at 10 p.m. Starting Jan. 22

What do you call someone who talks like Elvis, looks like James Dean, acts like Arthur Fonzarelli and still lives with his mom?  Johnny Bravo, of course.  A top-rated original series on Cartoon Network for many years, JOHNNY BRAVO will be introduced to Boomerang audiences with a three-hour marathon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 21, from 8-11 p.m. (ET).  The animated “Sultan on Self-Regard” then joins the commercial-free network in its nightly timeslot at 10 p.m. (ET).  Boomerang will present a full 65 half-hours of JOHNNY BRAVO, extending its programming mission to showcase both traditional classic and “new classic” animated programs to family audiences.

“Ever since Johnny first hit the airwaves in 1997, his irrepressible personality has struck a chord with young viewers around the world,” said Rico Hill, vice president of programming for Cartoon Network and Boomerang.  “Without question a real cartoon icon, he continues to enjoy enormous appeal and recognition.  So to kick off the new year with something special, we decided to give Boomerang audiences the chance to re-introduce themselves to Johnny from his earliest episodes to his later holiday specials.”

JOHNNY BRAVO tells the story of a biceps-bulging, karate-chopping free-spirit who believes he is a gift from God to the women of the earth.  Unfortunately for Johnny, everyone else just sees him as an unabashedly narcissistic Mama’s boy with big muscles and even bigger hair.  In short, he is the quintessential guy who “just doesn’t get it.”  No matter what he does, or where he finds himself, he typically winds up being his own worst enemy.

JOHNNY BRAVO first appeared on Cartoon Network in 1996 as part of the network’s “World Premiere Toons” program.  That same year, Cartoon Network viewers selected Johnny Bravo, as “Toon of the Year.”  In July 1997, the series JOHNNY BRAVO, created by animator Van Partible, debuted on the network as the third Cartoon Cartoon original series.  Over the years, JOHNNY BRAVO featured a number of pop-icon guest stars—usually animated versions of themselves—including Farrah Fawcett, Adam West, Luke Perry, Maureen McCormick, Molly Shannon, Joe McIntyre and Donny Osmond.  Expanding his career beyond his own series, Johnny also served as host to Cartoon Network’s Cartoon Cartoon Fridays and has starred in a variety of half-hour holiday specials including A Johnny Bravo Christmas and It’s Valentine’s Day, Johnny Bravo.

Six of JOHNNY BRAVO’s earliest episodes will be featured among the 12 presented in the Martin Luther King Jr. Marathon:

8 p.m.: Episode #1

  • Super Duped”  When Little Suzy tells her class that Johnny is a superhero, he goes along with the gag to impress her gorgeous teacher.  But when a supervillain shows up, Johnny is forced to prove himself or suffer total humiliation.
  • Bungled in the Jungle”  Johnny ticks off a stewardess who boots him hair-first into the middle of Jungleboy’s world.
  • Bearly Enough Time”  While camping in the forest, Johnny awakens Chronos the Bear, “the master of all time.”  Johnny must help the bear go back to sleep or risk being eaten.

  • “My Fair Dork”  Johnny turns Henry Higgins when he’s got to turn a school geek into the picture of studliness: himself.
  • “‘Twas the Night”  ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and what do you know?  Johnny takes Santa out with a powerful blow.  And with Santa out cold, what can we say?  Johnny Bravo’s the dude with the sack and the sleigh.

  • “Blarney Buddies”  When Johnny mistakes a leprechaun for the Blarney Stone, all kinds of trouble erupts as Johnny tries to kiss him.

  • “Johnny Bravo Meets Farrah Fawcett”  Johnny discovers that Farrah Fawcett is attending Little Suzy’s birthday party and will do anything to meet (and kiss) his most favorite prime-time angel.

9:40 p.m.: Episode #6

  • “Hip Hop Flop!”  A Hip Hop girl catches Johnny’s eye, but the only way she’ll look back is if Johnny gets all funky fresh.  When the rap group “The Round Pound” comes to Aron City, Johnny gets a crash course on Hip Hop culture from the 300 pound rappers.
  • “Talk to Me Baby”  Johnny sees talk show host Vendela on television and decides that he’s the guy for her.  Unfortunately for Johnny, Vendela and her guests have a little something to say about that.
  • Blanky Hanky Panky”  A man who thinks he’s a cat has stolen all the yarn in Aron City except for one shred…Johnny Bravo’s precious baby blanket.
