Boomerang Celebrates Mother’s Day With Wilma Flintstone Marathon

[via press release]

Wilma Flintstone Gets Mother’s Day Tribute on Sunday, May 13

Seven-Hour Mother’s Day Wilma-Thon Culminates with Boomerang Movie Presentation, Hollyrock-A-Bye Baby

Throughout time, mothers have been revered for their love, nurture and support…not to mention their hard work.  To celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13, Boomerang, Cartoon Network’s 24-hour commercial-free sister network, gives birth to a 7–hour tribute to that modern Stone-Age matriarch, Wilma Flintstone.  During the WILMA FLINTSTONE MOTHER’S DAY MARATHON, which airs from 12-7 p.m. (ET), viewers will see Wilma Flintstone through the years—as she and Fred first court, during her pregnancy, as a new mother and, finally, as she becomes a grandmother.  The marathon kicks off with five and one-half hours of Wilma-centric escapades from The Flintstones animated series and concludes with the Boomerang presentation of the 90-minute animated feature Hollyrock-A-Bye Baby (1993).

Following are the programming details for Boomerang’s WILMA FLINTSTONE MOTHER’S DAY MARATHON: (All times ET)

  • 2:30 p.m.: “The Surprise” – Fred finds out that there will be a new addition to the Flintstone family when Wilma announces she’s expecting a child.
  • 3 p.m.: “Mother-in-Law’s Visit” – In anticipation of becoming a father, Fred promises to be more kind, considerate and thoughtful.  But when his mother-in-law arrives with lots of advice, Fred is pushed to the limit.

  • 5 p.m.: “How to Start a Fight with Your Wife Without Really Trying” – Bad marital advice leads Fred into a huge argument with Wilma, so they separate.  But when both Fred and Wilma have nightmares warning that the other is in trouble, they both wake up and rush into each other’s arms.
  • 5:30 p.m.: “Hollyrock-A-Bye-Baby” – Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm are now married and move to Hollyrock to try to break into the movie business.  It turns out the two have been working on a double feature – twins.  Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty head out west to visit their kids.  While helping his son-in-law sell his script, Fred gets tangled with a glamorous movie actress and some shady jewel thieves in this 2-hour animated feature.

On Sept. 30, 1960, The Flintstones premiered nationwide at 8:30 p.m. (ET) on ABC.  The show immediately assumed historic status as the first animated situation comedy on television, the first animated series to go beyond the seven-minute cartoon format, and the first to feature human characters to be shown on prime time.  The series centered around the modern stone-age family, Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their daughter Pebbles and their dinosaur-dog, Dino.  The family’s best friends lived next door, Barney and Betty Rubble, and their son Bamm-Bamm.  The Flintstones ran for six years (1960-66), totaling 166 original episodes, and spawned multiple series spin-offs throughout the years.
