New York, NY — March 12, 2002 — With changes afoot next season in the Saturday-morning TV landscape, Nickelodeon–the number-one entertainment brand for kids–will broaden its offerings and introduce a new programming block for The CBS Television Network’s Saturday-morning children’s schedule, it was announced today by Cyma Zarghami, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Nickelodeon. Beginning in September 2002, kids will get more of their favorite Nick shows on CBS on Saturday mornings –including The Wild Thornberrys and Hey Arnold!–as some of Nickelodeon’s most popular animated series with kids 2-11 make their broadcast television debut. The new series being added to the schedule will be combined with the established Nick Jr. preschool favorites to serve a wider kids 2-11 audience on CBS’s Saturday mornings.

‘After building the biggest Saturday-morning preschool audience on broadcast television in less than two seasons on CBS, we’re responding to the changes in the Saturday-morning landscape and broadening our programming range with a combination of shows that register with kids across all age groups,’ Zarghami said. ‘Saturday mornings have belonged to Nickelodeon for the past six seasons, and our strategy for the upcoming year is to double up on our hits and give all kids access to the shows they really want to see.’

Premiering this fall from 7 a.m.-12 p.m. (ET/PT), CBS’s Saturday-morning children’s schedule–titled ‘Nick on CBS’–will feature six half-hour series. For the first time, the CBS block will include some of Nickelodeon’s cornerstone animated favorites, including Hey Arnold! and The Wild Thornberrys, and two Nick hits with proven cross-demo kid appeal, As Told By Ginger and Pelswick. The first hour of the block (7-8 a.m. ET/PT) will continue to feature the award-winning, landmark Nick Jr. program, Blue’s Clues, and the number-one preschool show on commercial television, Dora the Explorer. The Early Show will remain in its current time period of 9-11 a.m. (ET/PT).

Nickelodeon’s own Saturday-morning schedule, which has been the number-one-rated block against all broadcast and cable networks among kids 2-11 for the past six seasons, will welcome two new shows next season. Nick’s new line-up will feature The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the television series based on the Oscarâ -nominated hit movie, and the network’s breakout action/comedy hit, The Fairly OddParents. They will join a line-up anchored by the top-rated SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, CatDog and Rocket Power.

Season to date (9/22/01-3/2/02) from 7 a.m.-12 p.m. (ET/PT), CBS’s current Nick Jr.-supplied block is the number-one broadcast network on Saturday mornings with kids 2-5 and is second only to Nickelodeon among this audience overall. The block is averaging a 3.2/14 rating and share (515,000 average kid viewers) among its target kids 2-5 audience, a full +52% ahead of the number-two-ranked broadcast network, Kids’ WB (2.1/9 rating and share [329,000 average kid viewers]). Nick currently is averaging a 3.9/18 national rating and share [627,000 average kid viewers]. The ‘Nick Jr. on CBS’ block also draws a sizeable kids 2-11 audience, currently averaging a 1.8/8 rating and share (727,000 average kid viewers) in its 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. (ET/PT) time period.
