[via press release – original release date uncertain]

GRIM & EVIL Debuts on Cartoon Network Aug. 24

New Series Was Selected by Cartoon Network Fans during Cartoon Cartoon Weekend in 2000

GRIM & EVIL, created by Maxwell Atoms, will debut on Cartoon Network at 8:00 p.m. (ET, PT) on August 24, 2001. GRIM & EVIL is comprised of two darkly humorous cartoons, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and Evil Con Carne.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy tells the story of two young kids, happy-go-lucky Billy and cynical, deadpan Mandy, who become best friends with the Grim Reaper after winning an otherworldly limbo contest against the messenger of Death.   Together, this unlikely trio deals with typical suburban challenges – school, family, and dealing with unwanted visitors from the spirit world.

GRIM & EVIL’s other cartoon, Evil Con Carne, is about a criminally insane brain, the bear he is attached to, and his disembodied stomach.  Most of jillionaire playboy Hector con Carne’s body was destroyed in a freak accident, but thanks to modern technology his brain and stomach were attached to a stupid, lumbering circus bear named Boskov.  Despite these circumstances, Hector, with help from henchmen General Skarr and Major Doctor Ghastley, remains focused on his goal of taking over the world.  This proves difficult, however, when any pot of honey can spoil his plans to deep-fry Canada or blow up the moon.

“GRIM & EVIL is the remedy for all those disgustingly cute baby cartoons and sappy superhero dramas,” Atoms said.  “If you’re ready to root for the bad guys, this is a cartoon for you.”

GRIM & EVIL earned its spot in Cartoon Network’s line-up of original animated series during The Big Pick, held Aug. 25-27, 2000. Viewers voted by phone or online to determine which of three cartoon finalists Cartoon Network would develop into an original half-hour series for 2001. With a resounding 57 percent of the votes, Cartoon Network fans selected Maxwell Atoms’ strangely macabre yet hilarious short, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.  Thirteen 30-minute episodes of the series will be produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, CA.

Maxwell Atoms began his career animating for computer games.  He has worked on a multitude of television cartoons, including Felix the Cat, Cow and Chicken and I Am Weasel.  Atoms traces his influences to Surrealism, alchemy and a childhood love of monsters.
