TBS, Inc. Announces Classic Animation Network;
BOOMERANG to Launch in Spring 2000
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) will launch a new, 24-hour animation network, featuring the classic cartoons and stars of the Hanna-Barbera library, it was announced today by Betty Cohen, president of Cartoon Network Worldwide, who will oversee the new network. BOOMERANG will target parents and adults 30+, as wen as their young kids, and will feature classic Hanna-Barbera characters including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw and Top Cat, as created by the legendary animation team of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. Turner Broadcasting’s newest entertainment service, which will be available nationwide, will debut in Spring 2000, bringing to 20 the number of networks in the Turner portfolio.
“Cartoon Network’s phenomenal audience growth with older kids and young adults is increasingly driven by our aggressive ramp-up of original programming and contemporary acquisitions,” commented Cohen. “Our research and consumer feedback tells us we still have enormous opportunity to serve baby boomer parents with more of the classic favorites they grew up with. BOOMERANG will give them the chance to share those favorites with their kids.
“BOOMERANG will complement Cartoon Network, but will have its own feel and tone. Nearly 90 percent of BOOMERANG’s programming will be unduplicated on Cartoon Network, whose contemporary original and acquired cartoons are geared toward kids 6-11 and young adults.
